At Chase Side, some classes will include children from more than one year group. This is called a mixed-age class. It means children of different ages learn together with the same class teacher.

The class will follow the Chase Side curriculum. Teachers plan learning carefully so that each child is taught what they need for their age and stage. Children may sometimes work together, and at other times work in groups or individually on learning suited to them.

Mixed-age classes can bring benefits: children get to know and learn alongside a wider group of classmates, and they have opportunities to explain ideas, listen to others and develop independence. Younger children can learn from older classmates, while older children can strengthen their understanding by discussing and applying their learning.

The teacher remains responsible for every child’s learning and progress. They check what children know, address gaps and adapt teaching where needed. A child’s progress is considered against the expectations for their own year group—not simply compared with other children in the class.
